I really wanted to like this book more! The concept was good and I liked the main character but I had a couple big gripes with it. First, there is a time issue: because they are moving through space so quickly, 5 Earth years will pass in around 20 weeks on board ship. And yet, on board the ship, the Aimee ages 5 years in those 20 weeks. I'm not sure why the author thinks she would continue to age at Earth's pace. Also, the author has a second time issue: Aimee is on board ship around 10 weeks. The author doesn't adequately denote the passage of time, so it literally reads as though she's there for about 4 days. Because of that, there is hardly any relationship development between Aimee and her "friends" on board. Toward the end, she's very concerned about a couple of the medical people (Rajah and someone else) that I barely remembered because the only time we met them is when Aimee was first on board and it seems like she's only been there a few days, anyway, so I couldn't understand why she was so concerned. After that, when they were heading back to Earth she says that one week is equal to one quarter of an Earth year, which means a total of 20 weeks. So, I guess that made more sense, but why didn't we get to see her developing relationships? I really wanted to like this, but I didn't even like it enough to buy the sequels.Tags : Beyond [Maureen A Miller] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 4.5 stars First reviewed at New Adult Addiction - I received a free copy from Book Monster Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a nice surprise. Not only was it well written, but it kept me captivated the entire time. Miller’s writing flows easily through the story as she describes how Aimee, a young teenager from Earth must cope with the fact that she was just abducted from Earth and has no chance of returning for five years.
Supposedly the “abduction” was a mistake caused by a young scientist who was on Earth to gather plant life that might be critical to the survival of his race. The aliens on the Guardian ship Horus, also human-like – and just let me stop here because I’ve seen a lot of readers say human-like aliens are a lack of imagination on the author’s part. But I have to disagree. As a scientist, the human body plan makes a lot of sense. Why wouldn’t it be duplicated? Anyway – the aliens on the ship Horus are human-like and I appreciated that.
So Aimee has been picked up for some nefarious reason by a young man named Salvan, who seems to have an infatuation with her. His job is to find a cure for a devastating disease that has wiped out the home world of these transient beings. And this is why they are traveling the universe—stopping by as many planets as they can to collect plant life, desperately seeking a cure.
But there is another young man on the ship – and this guy looks and acts different form the rest. Zak is a warrior. He’s standoffish (aren’t all the good ones standoffish!) and he’s gorgeous. He feels an attraction to Aimee, and Aimee feel the same way back. They have a few adventures together, but always there is that damn Salvan meddling in Aimee’s life.
This was book was very good. If you’re into SF I’d highly recommend it. It’s got just enough adventure and romance to keep you interested in just about every way possible. The new technology introduced is interesting, and the twists at the end are quite unexpected. I won’t give any away, but the second book is set up perfectly. And best of all – all three books are out right now.
I only made it to about Chapter 7 before I decided Aimee was just like every other boy-crazy, hormone driven teenager in every teenage-angsty novel ever, so I quit. I was intrigued until we met Zak after she was abducted. The writing itself was okay, nothing amazing, but okay, and would have been better if the plot did it justice.
Then, Aimee decided to become fascinated with Zak, the ultra-attractive Warrior on board. Any time she was with him, she was consumed with how attractive he was, and the author WOULD NOT STOP dropping descriptions of Zak, Zak's hair, Zak's chest, Zak's voice. It very quickly grew tiresome, and I decided not to waste any more time.
So, once again, another novel that kind of had a chance destroyed by an author writing a whimsy female who is supposed to be super smart, but is instead more interested in an attractive alien than the knowledge around her.
I enjoyed the idea of the book and it was an easy read; however there were several inconsistencies that drove me nuts.
For example, Aimee is supposed to be intelligent, but she has to be told repeatedly (at least 3 different times) that it will take 5 Earth years to get her back home. Even then she considers taking a ship that is clearly not designed for extended travel back home because she doesn't understand what has been repeatedly explained to her.
I was further frustrated when Aimee is reflecting that she is 5 years older and wiser, but because time is different in space she really is only 5 months older (90 days on earth is approximately one week in space). I appreciate that the author took into account that time in space is different than on Earth, but then she seemed to forget this.
I also felt like the relationship between Aimee and Zak was forced. There was no real development of their relationship. Zak who never shares is telling Aimee about the worst experience of his life just because she asked.
For those who care, there was mild profanity (damn, oh my God, etc) and nothing more sexual than kissing.
I am only half way though the book, I'm hoping it gets better. I'm frustrated with Aimee's stupidity. What person would climb aboard a ship (angel thing) and start messing about when she's only been with the Horus for such a short time? She doesn't seem impulsive, but some of her actions make her seem 10 rather than a girl about to start engineering school. I'm hoping she grows, quickly, because right now she seems selfish and childish.
I finished the book. It got better, but I didn't think it was great
