Back-country innocent, George Orr agrees to risk imprisonment to help old friends of his father commit a 'symbolic' crime against the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.
Set in 1951, the plan is to rob the holiday shipment of liquor bound for an LCBO store near their homes on Manitoulin Island at the top of Lake Huron.
Initially motivated by a chance to learn to drive, George becomes a wanted felon, upright businessman, a romantic and a charming liar.
Laced with subtle humor and tender characterization, the novel explores repressive social practices, long-accepted prejudice, small town behavior and the fine art of prevarication.

Somewhat familiar with rural Canada and knowing a little about Ontario liquor laws, Liars was a particular treat to read. Even if I was not conversant with the above, the novel rolled out a delightful tale with a believable mix of characters riding out the winter between a storekeeper’s woodstove and the local diner where they warmed themselves with gossip.I thought 17 year-old George Orr at times acted more responsibly than a country kid might. Mostly, his thoughts and actions were spot on, creating a memorable character, an innocent youngster and quick-thinking liar.
The ‘battle’ with authority over archaic, repressive liquor laws and practices was creatively presented without overkill or disruption to the story. The author often strayed from eye-opening government control in favor of keeping me focused on the views and fancies of the enterprising George Orr.
Native North American Indians were depicted as many think about children: to be seen a little and heard not at all. Yet they had a remarkable impact on the tapestry of the story. The ending was an underplayed tumult and made me believe that the author may have a sequel planned. If so, count me in!
