Zacharel has disappointed his Deity for the last time. He has been placed in charge of an army full of Angels with one last chance. If they fail Zacharel fails. Annabelle watched her parents be murdered by a demon. No one believed her and she was blamed for their deaths. She was locked away in the hospital for life. The demon that killed her parents marked her somehow, she has been fighting demons sent to find her.
Zacharel is surprised to find her there but doesn’t like what is being done to her. He takes her to his cloud. He needs to find out more about her. She fascinates him. He refuses to let any of the other Angels near her and feels possessive of her. His feelings and behavior shock him. However things get crazy as the demons keep coming. Zacharel is determined to keep Annabelle safe.
Annabelle is shocked when she realizes what really happened to her, her parents and who was behind it all. In the process Zacharel has to learn a huge lesson and make a heartbreaking decision.
I have been fascinated with Zacharel when he was helping the Lords of the Underworld. He has been so removed emotionally. He doesn’t understand human emotions. So this was an awesome read, watching how he responded. Annabelle turned his life upside down. It was fun to read. He had no idea what to do with her at first. The author made his situations trying to his normal reactions. I loved watching him puzzle his way through things.
The author also introduces you to the ragtag angels that Zacharel leads. They are bad boys and all have their own stories. The author hints at some of them but they come across very mysterious. It will be entertaining to read their stories I’m sure.
Zacharel comes to respect them throughout this story. The issues Zacharel has on his own, the realizations he had with Annabelle and then the relationship with those he leads really add different layers to the story. Zacharel has to navigate through all the emotions that accompany him. He has no clue how to deal at first since he locked his heart away a long time ago. The ending revealed a shock but the author left hints if you were paying attention. It was a great read. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

I loved this book! I'm a huge Gena Showalter fan and read all of the Lords of the Underworld series so of course I knew about Zacharel somewhat and was excited to know he was going to get his own book. Now I'm loving all of the other Angels of the Dark and want to know about them as well.

The first book in this series introduces us to Zacharel's army of misfits...all of which have lost favor from the Deity in some way or the other. All of which are supposed to be lead by Zacharel, who himself has been punished by the Deity for his own transgressions. The pain that Zacharel has carried for centuries has hardened him and not allowed him to open up to anyone for any reason...so of course his army doesn't trust him or follow him and gets him in more trouble with the Deity on a regular basis.

Enter Annabelle...tricked into becoming the consort of the demon Unforgiveness...accused of killing her parents in cold blood and locked away in a mental institution for years being abused and assaulted by not only the staff but the demons sent to "play" with her. The immediate response from Zacharel when he met Annabelle was exactly how I thought it would be...feelings he didn't understand and couldn't relate to but so strong he couldn't leave her in the hospital on her own. Of course he chalked it up to "finding out why the demons were after her" and not his feelings at all but we all knew why he did it. -)

I don't want to give too much away so I'll just say this...often when you start a new series you have to spend too many chapters (in my opinion) sorting through the whys and hows of the back stories...so not the case with this series. Now I will tell you that I strongly recommend you read the Lords of the Underworld Series first because it really sets the scene with the Deity and the Titans and Greeks and the battle that is brewing in the heavens. But I believe you could still enjoy this book if you didn't.

And finally...I'm not sure why but I was SOOOO SHOCKED with the revelation with Unforgiveness...I can't believe I didn't see that coming and it brought a tear to my eyes when he had to make his choice. sniff sniff so sad!
