In 1896, the decapitated remains of a young woman were discovered in a field near Cincinnati, Ohio. What follows is the determined efforts to discover her identity and to apprehend the murderers, the public being both shocked and fascinated by the middle class respectability of both the victim and the perpetrators, as well as the killers' seeming lack of emotion in the face of their brutality. This was the era of the yellow press, the "New Woman" but also the inconvenient woman - in this situation, an unmarried pregnant woman, likely scared and desperate, with no safe medical options and little expectation of sympathy or support from either her family or society at large. The author's interest in local history is to be noted, as well as his ample use of contemporary accounts and other sources that could be located. Some historical discussions in the work had no more than tenuous connections with the case at hand and felt more like both padding and a distraction from the narrative.

Good book
Couldn’t put book down. The author did a great job of painting a picture of the time and the characters. Lots of interesting historical tidbits thrown in. Looking forward to his next book.
Excellent story...sad but interesting read
Andrew Young does a great job not a great storyteller, he dives deeper into the history and background of the time period and really immerses the reader in the story.

I would recommend this book to anybody interested in true murder mysteries.
This book is about the area I grew up in. The book was very interesting.
The story was very interesting and well researched. The author bogged the book down with long tangential sections for historical reference. That I could of done without. The book would have been better in my opinion.
Good book. A very interesting approach to history! An interesting story providing a wealth of information surrounding the times. Things I never knew related in a very interesting way to tie things together. I know the author and his passion for history is genuine. This story can relay that passion to make it inspirational regarding the history of the times.
Praise to the author and his integrity to tell the true story, and do it very well.
