I loved this book, loved the characters; it has everything I want in a fantasy novel; magic, hope, darkness and emotion. My heart was broken more than once while reading A Demon in Silver and my only issue is that I now have to wait until next year for book two! This one goes on my favorites shelf, to be read again and again.Tags : Amazon.com: A Demon in Silver (War of the Archons) eBook: R.S. Ford: Kindle Store,ebook,R.S. A Demon in Silver War of the Archons eBook RS Ford Reviews
Review first posted at Girl Who Reads. A free copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Magic has disappeared from the world, and war had ravaged the continent. Nations are at war, bandits travel the roads, and the average people in the world have little to their names. A young woman without memory and nearly burned to a crisp heals quickly and has skill with weapons. In another area, Livia suddenly performs magic and has to hide it so that she isn't taken against her will to Duke Gothelm. It's a rush to try to seize power before the other nations get it because magic is rare and superstition runs rampant.
There are multiple story threads at the beginning of the novel, and it isn't initially clear how they all intersect. Josten Cade cuckolds the Duke he works for despite being loyal. Silver has no memory of her life before coming to the farm but has nightmares of fighting frightening beings. Livia grew up on a farm and is able to make an entire garden bloom overnight. Her magic flares at erratic times, which gets her caught anyway, and her dreams seem to mirror Silver's. As the novel progresses, the threads start coming together and it begins to make more sense.
Pay close attention to the time stamps at the beginning of the chapters, though. Because the story skips around a bit in the middle, and there are fragments of mythology and poetry at the close of each chapter, it can be easy to lose track of where in the story you actually are. I'm not sure there's a better way to arrange everyone's backstories because it's all important to know. The final third of the book is the most cinematic part, with the epic battles and the reveal as to who Silver and Livia really are and why they know of each other. I would actually rate this as 3.5 stars because of the confusing opening and time stamp issues, but doesn't give that as an option.
The very end has a bit of a twist to it, as well as enough loose ends to make me hope that there's a sequel to this.
Maybe I don't read enough (hahaHAHAHA) but I honestly can't think of a grimdark meets high fantasy series that is as accessible as R. S. Ford's War of The Archons. Granted, we only have the first book, A Demon In Silver, but I was well impressed with how Mr Ford took the best elements of both genres to create a very readable series debut. Written as essentially a chase narrative, we're introduced to the various players as they become embroiled in the pursuit of Livia Harrow, a farm girl who begins to display magical powers thought to have disappeared over a century ago. Best of all, the book then circles round to its beginning to upend everything we thought we knew about the narrative. It's a thrilling, twisty trip through a brutal fantasy land that isn't, thankfully, just a reimagined Europe, and I'm definitely on board to see where Mr Ford goes with this series next.
One thing I could use a little less of were the (thankfully only occasional) incidents of tortured prose. Style is as style does, and while I can overlook the creative use of adverbs (and the overuse of the word "trews",) this next was just too much for me
"Her fingers moved across the blanket that covered her until her fingertips were consumed by [her dog's] soft fur."
No, her dog does not have carnivorous fur, and no, her fingertips did not undergo some sort of physical or spiritual transformation. As much as I love my people at Titan Press (hello and thank you for the books!) this kind of nonsense begs for stricter editing. But if that kind of thing doesn't bother you, then I can absolutely recommend ADiS as a terrifically written high grimdark fantasy, especially since it is far and away the most fun I've had with the genre since early Ciaphas Cain (which technically is genre-adjacent, I know, don't @ me.)
I was surprised by how vulgar it was. Within the first 20 pages I knew this was a book that I didn't want to read. It was more graphic and vulgar than was necessary or appropriate.
It was a bit slow at first, but once it picked up I was unable to put it down. The only thing that bothered me was the word span when describing a movement. All in all I will def look forward to the next book in the series.
I loved this book, loved the characters; it has everything I want in a fantasy novel; magic, hope, darkness and emotion. My heart was broken more than once while reading A Demon in Silver and my only issue is that I now have to wait until next year for book two! This one goes on my favorites shelf, to be read again and again.
