Sanctuary Sparrow the The Cadfael Chronicles 9780751502176 Books

I was hooked on Brother Cadfael from my first read. The good Brother is close to my age (68) and I got to know his varied past experiences before he took his vows and from this was able to follow his tales with a personal affection for him, respect for his justice and gratification from his successes. Mind, they don't come easily in the Cadfael books! As a bonus, the historical setting is a major plus for those of us who like historical fiction, and will likely captivate new readers just as it has me. One can learn while being entertained by this series. By the way, I purchased and read this and all my Cadfael reads electronically. The quality is very good, the editing errors minor.

Sanctuary Sparrow the The Cadfael Chronicles 9780751502176 Books Reviews

I have long read and admired Ellis Peters Brother Cadfield stories. I watched all of the Mystery movies as well. I have been fascinated with the descriptions of 12 th century living in the cloister and towns. This story was as fascinating as the others in the series and I shall look forward to rereading others as well.
Ellis Peters does and excellent job of keeping the reader guessing as to is the guilty party in all of his twenty Cadfael stories. He is a good writer and knows eleventh century culture and history of life on the Welsh -England border. I highly recommend all of his Chronicles of Brother Cadfael books. The books are also of reasonable cost.
This is the second book of the Cadfael series I have read and enjoyed it just as thorough as the first. I selected at random and want to go back and read the series in the order of publication although it appears that each is capable of standing alone. Always thrilled to discover a new author. I would recommend Peters to anyone needing a break from traditional modern mysteries.
Ellis Peters' outstanding Brother Cadfael series is without a doubt one of the best of the genre. Not only have I read every volume in the series, but I have reread them several times. Ellis Peters has a way with her when she crafts her tale. She is a treasure. A word to the wise, however the Public Broadcasting System version of Cadfael mutilates her stories. One must READ the prose to savor these stories.
This falls in between the stellar Cadfael mysteries and the more mundane ones. The "sanctuary sparrow" is an itinerant juggler and musician who, fingered as the murderer of one of Shrewbury's most prominent merchants, flees into the church of Saints Peter and Paul, asking for sanctuary. The problem is, he's such a meek, downtrodden soul that it's hard to work up a real interest in him. Never mind; keep reading to meet the interesting character the merchant's strong-willed daughter, about to lose her place in the household to her new sister-in-law.
This series, the Brother Cadfael books, have become another of my "comfort reading" books, along with Georges Simenon's Maigret, Dona Leon's Commissario Brunetti. I can always be assured of a good, clever, intelligent character-driven story with Ellis Peters's Cadfael, and total emersion into the Medieval life. The "Sanctuary Sparrow" has a wonderful twist at the end you do not see coming. Highly recommended.
This seventh book of the Brother Cadfael series takes place over seven days in Shrewsbury. I love the opening with the brothers midnight Mass interrupted by Liliwin, a traveling entertainer besot by an angry wedding mob. They accuse of theft and murder. He seeks, and is granted, sanctuary, at the Abby until the whole thing can be sorted out.

It took me awhile to figure out who the murderer actually was. Ellis did a wonderful job of hiding the clues up until the very end. She does an outstanding job of representing life in the 12th century. Particularly, in household duties of the wife and what type of authority she has.

If you've read any of the other Brother Cadfael books, you won't be disappointed with this one.
