Strange Angels Strange Angels Book 1 Lilith Saintcrow Books

Actual rating 3.5 stars.

I was pleasantly surprised by ‘Strange Angels,’ it starts off with a bang and takes one surprising road after another. There is an ancient twist to the monsters and mythology in this novel that kept me engaged. It did not feel like every other YA paranormal in this genre.

I was engaged throughout and found myself investing in our protagonist Dru, and even began to ‘ship her and Graves. Dru is a gritty independent heroine, but also a teen girl with hopes of normality. I was really rooting for her, and forever trying to work out what was going on.

Christophe was introduced too late in the novel for me to care about. But Graves, the only other male was Asian geeky deliciousness. Easy going
and loyal to a fault. And thank goodness it did not feel like a love triangle, or instalove even though it had all the ingredients for this trope.

There are some spoony moments and this has a heavy 'Supernatural' (the television show) vibe, except it's a female lead instead of the Winchester brothers.

Lili St. Crow has a wonderful writing style. Her wording was so unexpected yet flourishing and edgy, complementing the tone of ‘Strange Angels.’ It's a dark horror comedy that definitely entertained and I have become an instant fangirl.

I don't feel like there was a whole lot of resolution - in fact very little - but it has asked a whole lot of questions that I can see stretching out over the four novels to follow. I'm intrigued to find out what happens in ‘Betrayals.’ And discover even more about the mythology of the real world and Dru's heritage.

Definitely recommend this to lovers of the YA horror/fantasy genre. A quick punchy read.

Strange Angels Strange Angels Book 1 Lilith Saintcrow Books Reviews

"Reckoning" has been a much-awaited book, at least for me. There are five books in all. If you haven't read this series, start with book one. Here's the series in order

Book 1 - Strange Angels (Strange Angels, Book 1)
Book 2 - Betrayals (Strange Angels, Book 2)
Book 3 - Jealousy (Strange Angels, Book 3)
Book 4 - Defiance (Strange Angels, Book 4)
Book 5 - Reckoning A Strange Angels Novel

Warning Possible spoilers ahead--

From the beginning, sixteen-year-old Dru Anderson has been on the run from suckers, zombies, and other things found in nightmares. She's made it through many near-misses and almost lost her best friend, Graves, in the process. It's not a life she'd have chosen, but simply the hand she was dealt. Now she's trying to make the best of it by staying a step ahead of danger. Unfortunately, in this installment, she can't run fast enough and she must stand and fight.

The love triangle between Dru, Graves, and Christophe was beyond maddening throughout this series. At the end of one book, I was sure she'd pick Christophe just to find out in the next book, she'd leaned towards Graves. So what I wanted out of this last book was not only a conclusion, but I wanted Dru to choose which. Did this happen? No. It looks like she's leaning towards one, but who knows? Dru has already proven that she can flip more times than a pancake.

Okay, so there's no satisfaction in the romance department, what about the conclusion to the rest of the story? A showdown between the King of Vampires and Dru does happen, but the threat on Dru's life will always remain. Not only that, more about Dru's lineage was revealed. This new information was way cool, but only provided more fuel for another book or that's how I see it.

As a whole, this is my favorite young adult series ever. There's a hint of romance and gobs of action with a paranormal slant, not to mention, clear, precise characters--even though Dru could never make up her mind which guy she was in love with. If you are looking for a solid conclusion, know it's not going to happen. Even so, I can't give this one a negative rating. Out of all the books, this one was the best of the best and that's without a final wrap-up to the series.
"My father went way-out wack after my mom died and now he travels around hunting things that go bump in the night..." --Dru

Basically this "Saving people, hunting things. The family business." With Dru's dad now also dead... err, undead.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?? It's basically Supernatural, in book form! I was shocked to see so many similarities between the show and this book. It was crazy!

So, anyway, this case is supposed to be like any other case. Dru's father goes out to kill whatever supernatural creature they are currently after, then he is supposed to come back home after the hunt... Except he doesn't. Someone kills Dru's father and now that someone might be after Dru, as well. She needs to find out what her dad was hunting before she ends up dead herself. Plus, there is something about her... something different she doesn't know about... something this mysterious someone would kill to have. She's basically Sam Winchester! She's that kind of different.

I was kind of confused about her abilities, I mean she and her dad obviously knew she had some special abilities, but they are never really explained! Not until we find out what this "something different about her" is. We were never explained the extent of her powers. We were just kind of... shown, a little.

And then the thing with her mom's death... so much like Supernatural! That and her dad's death, the hunting, Dru's own powers... just add a sibling and we got the Winchesters! *sigh*

Even though I felt like I was reading Supernatural, I did enjoy the read! I loved the world that was created, all the interesting creatures. I loved the relationship between Dru and Graves, as well, and seeing how great a friend Graves turned out to be. I thought it was very sweet. The story was interesting enough, but more than a bit predictable.

I'm really looking forward to see where this story will be going next! Let's just hope Supernatural will be left a show and the plot line of the book will transform into something more original.
